10 Questions to Ask When Touring an Adult Care Home in Charlotte

Touring a family care home? Print this checklist. The right questions reveal staffing, medication management, meals, and the daily life your loved one will actually experience.

Touring an adult care home is emotional. It's easy to focus on the décor and miss the questions that actually predict the quality of care your loved one will receive. Use this checklist on every Charlotte tour — large facility or small adult care home.

  • What is the caregiver-to-resident ratio during the day, at night, and on weekends?
  • Who administers medications, and how is every dose documented?
  • Are meals cooked on site, and can you accommodate dietary restrictions?
  • What happens when a resident's care needs increase — do they have to move out?
  • How do you handle medical emergencies? Which hospital is closest?
  • May I meet the administrator and a caregiver who will actually work with my loved one?
  • What's included in the monthly rate, and what triggers an extra fee?
  • How do families stay updated — text, call, family portal, scheduled meetings?
  • What does a typical day look like for a resident with memory loss?
  • Can I drop in unannounced any time? (The honest answer here tells you a lot.)

What to listen for in the answers

Specifics beat slogans. "We treat everyone like family" sounds nice but means nothing. "Our day ratio is 1:3, our overnight caregiver is awake and on the floor, and medications are administered by a certified Med Tech with double documentation" tells you exactly what kind of care you're buying.

If anyone hesitates when you ask about unannounced visits, keep looking.
